Explore Grazy Acres, a small family farm located in Harvard, IL and learn from farmers Donna and Peter about how they manage their herd of fully grass-fed and finished Belted Galloways in rotationally grazing 60 acres of pasture and hayground, and a flock of Freedom Rangers in mobile chicken tractors. Their goal is to provide high quality meat directly marketed through on-farm sales, through farmers markets, and bulk cuts (whole, halves, and quarters), while positively influencing the natural biology of the soil. Join us for a hands-on field day where we'll walk through Farmers Rising's Climate Adaptation Plan and guide you through developing a climate resilience strategy for your own farm or property. Participants will explore practical, farm-scale approaches to reducing risk, improving resilience, and preparing for future challenges. Topics will include: -Developing a climate adaptation plan: process, goals, and implementation -Assessing climate risks and opportunities on your farm -Tree plantings and agroforestry practices -Water use tracking, conservation, and drought preparedness -Shade structures for livestock, workers, and crops -Invasive species management, including weeds and pests -Disease monitoring and prevention strategies -Preparing for extreme heat, drought, flooding, and severe weather -Building resilience through infrastructure, management, and long-term planning After touring Farmers Rising's adaptation projects, participants will have time to begin developing their own farm climate action plan with guided support and discussion. The Rockford City Council just approved funding for a customized refrigerated grocery truck and trailer that will bring fresh, affordable food to 10 stops across the city. For too long, families here have driven miles for fresh produce or make do with what the corner store had. That changes this year! ?Fresh and local food choices for the whole family. ? EBT, WIC, and SNAP Double Match all accepted. ? No more travel, we come to YOU! This didn't happen overnight. It's the result of years of work and partnership between Farmers Rising, City Center Market, the Rockford NAACP, the Food Insecurity Task Force, Rockford Housing Authority, Champions Benchmark, and Northern Illinois Food Bank. Recently, Tedd spent the morning with the students at Blackhawk Learning Connection, starting in the classroom where we talked about the life cycle of a plant. Each student got to repot a basil plant and take it home to continue growing. Then we headed out to the farm, where the kids helped plant brussel sprout seedlings and got a chance to experience farming firsthand. They were curious, excited, and ready to jump in and help. Moments like these remind us why connecting young people to food, farming, and nature matters. We’re excited to continue welcoming these students to the farm and watching their knowledge grow alongside the crops this season. ??

Last night, Farmers Rising took a big step towards making a mobile grocery store a reality for Rockford. Jackie de Batista, our Executive Director, went before City Council to make a formal funding request, asking for more than $800,000 over a 3 year period to help launch the project. While the motion to discuss was not taken up by the Planning and Development Committee last night, it will come back before them for consideration once again on June 22. De Batista told City Council members
Last night, Farmers Rising took a big step towards making a mobile grocery store a reality for Rockford. The Rockford Mobile Grocery Store will bring choice, dignity, and affordability to neighborhoods that have too often been left behind, and we look forward to partnering with the City of Rockford to make this vision a reality." Our new chickens are settled in! ? These babies started out in the barn in the comfort of their brooder. Once they were fully feathered, they moved into their new coop. We kept them inside for a few days so they could learn where home was before opening the doors. Last week they got their first taste of pasture, and they have been busy ever since. Scratching, foraging, chasing bugs, and exploring every corner they can find. It's always fun to watch. One day they're raised indoors, and the next they're out on open ground doing exactly what chickens were meant to do. Not a bad life for a chicken. ❤️?

This new thermostat-controlled automatic side roll up unit from Nifty Hoops will help regulate temperatures by automatically opening and closing the tunnel sides as needed. ? A big thanks to Rockford Housing Authority for making this all possible. We’re excited to see how this technology improves growing conditions and helps protect crops throughout the season. Big thanks to Tedd for continuing to problem solve and invest in better systems on the farm.

Alice, from southern Illinois, has already spent years helping people heal through her work as a massage therapist. Now, she’s taking that same care and intention into a new venture: flower farming. ? Alice is currently growing and expanding her iris collection, with plans to specialize in these stunning blooms as her farm grows. It’s been so exciting watching her blend creativity, wellness, and agriculture into something uniquely her own. Great work, Alice. We can’t wait to see where this journey takes you ?

TAKE ROOT HIGHLIGHT ? One of the most meaningful parts of Take Root is watching families grow together through farming, and this mother daughter duo has been doing exactly that. Suzette and Miranda have been hard at work building their family farm and continuing the transition toward more sustainable farming practices. Over the past few months, they have tackled some major projects, including building a brand new orchard fence to protect their young trees from heavy deer pressure in the area. The fence had to be both tall and sturdy, standing over 8 feet high to keep the orchard safe. At the end of March, they planted 54 new bare root apple trees. Thankfully, the deer stayed away while the fence was being built, and by late April every single tree had already bloomed alongside the 48 trees they planted last spring. Since planting, they have double staked, mulched, and organically treated all of the trees for early season pests. Beyond the orchard, the work hasn’t slowed down. Weekly mowing has officially begun, with wide rows intentionally left untouched to help encourage beneficial insects and naturally manage pests. Right now, rye cover crop rows are being used as part of that system. Miranda has also been busy planting this year’s soybean crop directly into the rye, working carefully around the nonstop spring rains. They also have fields planted in winter wheat and plan to harvest part of the rye for seed saving to use again next year. Not only do we love seeing a generational family farm move toward more sustainable practices, but we especially love seeing a young farmer like Miranda willing to step up and take it on with the support and encouragement of her parents behind her. This is what farming is about. This is what Take Root helps people do. Building confidence. Building skills. Building farms. Building the next generation of agriculture. ?

There was so much excitement, laughter, and connection as students helped guide the goats across the land. It was an unforgettable moment that truly captured the spirit of community, education, and regenerative farming. These goats are more than new additions to the farm. They represent the continued growth of our educational programs, hands on learning opportunities for youth, and the future of sustainable agriculture at Farmers Rising. We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make this day possible, and we can’t wait to share more as the Incubator Farm continue to grow. ?

New life is popping in the high tunnel ? Last week we planted kale, Chinese cabbage, and collard greens, and they are already thriving. It didn’t take long for nature to show up too… we spotted some very hungry caterpillars moving in almost immediately ? These little guys might look harmless, but they can do serious damage fast. Most of the time, they are the larvae of moths or butterflies like cabbage worms, and they can chew through leafy greens in just a couple days if left unchecked. Because of that, we’ve got these crops tucked safely under cover in the greenhouse to give them a strong, protected start. This is farming… growing food means growing alongside everything else that wants to eat it too. And learning how to protect it along the way ?

Step into the world of herbal medicine ? We’re launching a new series called The Farm Apothecary, starting with Beginner Herbalism for Health at Farmers Rising. There are two class dates! May 1st and May 16th! This hands-on workshop is all about learning how to use everyday plants to support your body in a simple, practical way. Our Spring Indulgence class came together with ingredients from farms and makers right here in our region, and you could truly taste the difference in every bite. ? The chocolate torte featured eggs from Third Great Farm and raw honey from Raines Honey Farm. ? The steak for both the entrée and Wellington came from Irish Grove. ? Our French onion soup was built from onions, shallots, and garlic from Bountiful Beloit. ? Flour came from Hazzard Free, and the cheese ? that brought it all together came from Cheese Brothers out of Barron, Wisconsin. This is what it looks like to cook from the land around you. She loves to sit on the laps of those most allergic to her, but no one denies her. Then there is Georgia, who we think belongs to a neighbor, but has clearly decided the vibes are better over here and spends most of her time with us. Everything feels a lot more like home when there are cats around.
